Deputy Minister Kamen Kitchev Supports the EU Requirements on Aviation Emissions

Kamen Kitchev, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communicationsand and the Director General of "Civil Aviation Administration" Lyudmil Manasiev met with the Assistant Manager of IATA for Bulgaria Elin Lambrev and the directors of all commercial airplane companies in the country.
During that meeting, Directive 2008/101/EC was discussed which includes aviation in the EU Emission Trading Scheme. The issue of the scheme's implementation and its impact on the airplane companies was also discussed. The expectations are that globally after 2012, the aviation industry will pay annually for this quota about 2, 6 billion euros. The Emission Trading Scheme requires that the aircraft operators monitor and report the corresponding data to the Administrative body (Ministry of Environment and Water) as of January 1, 2010. During the talks Deputy Minister Kamen Kitchev emphasized the particular significance of the year 2010 as that is when the monitoring reports will be drawn, becoming the basis for determining the free quotas. With the introduction of this Directive, EU makes an effort to speed up the process of fighting climate change on a global scale. The Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications and the "Civil Aviation Administration" will fully support and assist the Bulgarian aircraft operators in regards to the coordination and the procedure requirements as they pertain to government institutions with responsibilities coming out of the EU Directive 2008/101/EC.
