The Bulgarian EU Presidency will promote the idea of reducing roaming markups in the Western Balkan countries

The Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will enable the integration of the Western Balkans into the European digital policies. This was announced by Dimitar Genovski, Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, during a conference organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria on “Europe - the Head of the Digital Transformation: the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2018”. In his words, our country will promote initiatives to gradually reduce the markups for roaming services in the Western Balkan countries; broadband for all and high-speed cross-border connectivity.

“One of the main goals of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is the digital single market as a source of growth and competitiveness”, the Deputy Minister also said. Among the important decisions to be taken, he indicated the massive reform of the regulatory framework for electronic communications, as well as strengthening of the confidence in the digital services and their security.

Deputy Minister Dimitar Genovski indicated that the legislative changes would create conditions for the necessary investments, especially through the market, for the use of very high capacity networks and ultra-fast and secure internet. “They allow us to transmit and process hundreds of times more data, which will be related to revolutionary technologies such as automated cars, innovative healthcare, smart technologies in the construction of infrastructure in hard to reach areas”, the Deputy Minister said.
