Deputy Minister Dimitar Genovski: Bulgaria first in Europe solved the issue of Internet governance in the interest of consumers

Bulgaria was one of the first countries in Europe to legislate on the issue of governing Internet names and addresses in the interests of consumers, announced Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Dimitar Genovski at a conference on dialogue between Bulgaria and the International Organization for Internet Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The Internet governance model that supports transparency and freedom has created conditions for healthy competition among a large number of companies, Dimitar Genovski said. He pointed out that as a result of this policy, our country has reached leading positions on internet speed and accessibility of the prices for using the service. "The strong side of Bulgaria is related to the spread of high-speed broadband access to the global network, with more than half (55%) of fixed Internet access subscriptions for high-speed connections. This is an example of how government policy in managing this global resource is a powerful tool for achieving economic growth", Deputy Minister Genovski said.

Bulgarian entrepreneurs and institutions are very active in keeping and registering Internet names, he noted. According to him, 57500 sites are listed in the ".bg" area in Latin. Within just a few months internet names, registered in Cyrillic, are almost 3200.

Deputy Minister Dimitar Genovski reminded that the parameters of cooperation with ICANN are outlined in a memorandum signed with the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications (MTITC). According to him, at the threshold of the first Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the European Union the interaction gains new dimensions. "Bulgaria has outlined its Internet governance priorities that are in line with European priorities and goals for building a single digital market. Their implementation requires fast and affordable internet for all Europeans. Putting these topics on the agenda will also be one of the priorities within the Bulgarian presidency", he said.
